Course Overview

Introduction

Care Certificate Standard 9 focuses on developing awareness of mental health and dementia and understanding how these conditions may affect a person’s needs, experiences and daily life. This online course helps health and social care workers understand the importance of person-centred support, positive wellbeing, early identification, communication and responding appropriately when a person may need additional help. The course covers the knowledge-based elements of Standard 9 and is suitable for new care workers, healthcare assistants, support workers and existing staff completing induction or refresher training.


Aims

  • The course aims to help learners:

    • Understand what is meant by mental health and mental wellbeing
    • Develop awareness of common mental health conditions
    • Understand what dementia is and how it may affect a person
    • Recognise the importance of early identification and appropriate support
    • Understand how attitudes, stigma and discrimination can affect people
    • Support people in a person-centred and respectful way
    • Understand the importance of communication, consent and individual choice
    • Know when and how to report concerns or seek additional support


Objectives

  • The Care Certificates, which outline the essential skills required to function in the health and social care sectors, may be incorporated into your introduction process.
  • Before assuming any job where you may operate without direct supervision, you should complete and assess each standard. This may be done gradually and should happen right at the beginning of your job.
  • If you satisfy the standard, you may be permitted to carry out the tasks covered by it without direct supervision, albeit you will still require supervision in other respects.


This Care certificate is provided via e-learning on the internet. Students enrolled in the Care Certificate - Standard 9: Mental Health Dementia and Learning Disabilities course will have immediate access to our interactive LMS, which provides round-the-clock access to the curriculum.


What you will learn?

After completing the course, learners should be able to:

• Describe factors that may affect mental health and wellbeing
• Identify common signs that a person may need mental health support
• Describe how dementia may affect memory, communication and daily living
• Explain why every person’s experience of mental health or dementia is different
• Recognise the importance of dignity, inclusion and person-centred care
• Explain how their own attitudes and actions can affect the support a person receives
• Identify when concerns should be recorded, reported or referred according to workplace procedures


Assessment

Important Information: This online course supports the knowledge requirements of Care Certificate Standard 9. Completion of the course and assessment does not replace employer-led induction, workplace observation or assessment of applicable skills and behaviours.


Course Duration

• The online care course needs a minimum of one hour to complete. This can be a guide to the educational hours needed, and it depends on how quickly an individual can understand the course. The training is online. It may be displayed over multiple sessions or done in one session.

• Learners will have access to the present course for up to nine months from the date of joining. There's no pressure to finish the course in a short time.
